On December 14th, the Consular Office of Japan hosted a reception celebrating the 78th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan at the Captain Cook Hotel.  The reception was attended by 180 people.  The reception started with the playing of the national anthems of Japan and the United States, followed by a speech from Consul Fujita.

His speech centered on the March 11th Great East Japan Earthquake, expressing his deep thanks to the people and Government of Alaska for their sympathy and assistance shown to the victims and disaster affected areas.  As to the events which connected the people of Alaska more closely with Japan in 2011, he mentioned the visit to Anchorage of three training ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force which took place in June and the Japanese Summer Festival at Sandlake Elementary School in August.  He also referred to the historic meeting between His Majesty Emperor Hirohito, the father of the reigning Emperor Akihito, and President Nixon which took place 40 years ago in Anchorage.  Consul Fujita said the meeting was a great and proud moment for Anchorage.  Thereafter, guests toasted for His Majesty's good health and enjoyed a documentary showing the Emperor's official duties at the Imperial Palace.

Opening Statement by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda

PRIME MINISTER NODA: Today is November 11, exactly eight months since the Great East Japan Earthquake. On this landmark day I would like to again express my resolve for making my top priority working to ensure recovery and reconstruction from the disaster and responding to the nuclear power station accident in Fukushima Prefecture.

Before he begins to tell his story, Hideo Levy apologizes for his English. It's been a while. Until last year, he hadn't spoken his native language to an audience in around 20 years. Even in private, he rarely speaks English these days. Yet, if the American born author of "Seijoki no Kikoenai Heya" ("A Room Where the Star-Spangled Banner Cannot be Heard") and other Japanese works is self-conscious about his English oratorical skills, he's no less engaging for it. Laughter ripples through the JICC auditorium as he speaks. He can barely stay behind the podium as he fields questions from the audience, visibly gravitating toward them as if to thwart the barrier to conversation that the stage presents, seemingly wishing that instead of standing and talking before an audience he could somehow have a casual living room conversation with all of the nearly 100 people gathered there. They've come to hear the tale of how this man became a bestselling author in Japan -an American writing in Japanese to a Japanese audience.

His story begins some 20 years ago. As a scholar of Japanese Literature at Stanford University, he was establishing his reputation as a translator of considerable skill. He was approached by Abe Kobo, one of the most highly regarded Japanese authors of the 20th century, to do a translation of his play called Exhibition of Images for its American tour.

Working through the script in Abe's office in Shibuya, Tokyo, Levy came upon...
