Beginning of a new era in Japan

- On May 1, 2019, His Imperial Highness Crown Prince Naruhito has acceded to the Throne as the 126th Emperor of Japan.
- With the accession of His Majesty the Emperor Naruhito to the Throne, the year 2019 has become the first year of the new era, or Reiwa 1, in Japan beginning on May 1, 2019. The new name “Reiwa(令和)” conveys a meaning that “culture is born and nurtured when people’s hearts empathize with each other beautifully.” The character “rei(令)” is used to convey a sense of beauty, while “wa(和)” signifies harmony and peace. Thus, “Reiwa” symbolizes beautiful harmony.

- The Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage will have a congratulatory book available for signing for those who wish to express their congratulations on the accession to the Throne of His Majesty the Emperor Naruhito. The book will be open during the working hours of the Consular Office – 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. – on the following six days:
Wednesday, May 1st and Thursday, May 2nd
Tuesday, May 7th, Wednesday, May 8th, Thursday, May 9th, and Friday, May 10th
After May 10th, the book will be sent to Tokyo and submitted to the Imperial Household Agency through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
