Ceremony for the 50th Anniversary of the Introduction of LNG in Japan

On Wednesday, November 6, 2019, the Ceremony for the 50th Anniversary of the Introduction of LNG (liquefied natural gas) in Japan was held in Yokohama, Japan.
November 4, 2019 marks 50 years since LNG was first imported to Japan. Tokyo Electric Power Company ( now JERA Co., Inc. “JERA” ) and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. ( “Tokyo Gas” ), through Mitsubishi Corporation ( “Mitsubishi” ) acting as a buyer’s agent, started receiving LNG in 1969 from the Alaska LNG Project with Phillips Petroleum ( now ConocoPhillips ) as a seller.
The ceremony was hosted jointly by Tokyo Gas, JERA, Mitsubishi, and ConocoPhillips, and attended by about 170 people.
Governor Michael J. Dunleavy and First Lady Rose Dunleavy attended the ceremony as guests of honor. Governor Dunleavy congratulated Alaskan and Japanese economic and energy partners on 50 years of working together and expressed his sincere wish for a continued good relationship between Alaska and Japan.
Other dignitaries who attended the ceremony included Mr. Joseph M. Young, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, U.S. Embassy Tokyo, and Mr. Yohei Matsumoto, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
