2026 Japanese Summer Festival

On August 9, the Consular Office of Japan co-hosted the “Summer Festival” with the Japan Alaska Association. More than 500 people attended the event and enjoyed various aspects of a traditional Japanese summer, including Bon Odori dancing, taiko drumming, and yakisoba.
In his opening remarks, Head Consul Hamada introduced some of the unique features of Japanese summer festivals, as well as some of Japan’s most well-known festivals, and expressed his hope that the event would give participants a taste of the atmosphere of a summer festival in Japan. He also expressed, on behalf of the Government of Japan, his sincere appreciation for the warm messages of sympathy and solidarity extended by the U.S. Government and the American people following the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake, and expressed his hope for the earliest possible recovery and reconstruction. Members of the Alaska State Legislature and the Anchorage Assembly, including Sen. Forrest Dunbar, also delivered remarks.
Throughout the festival, attendees had many opportunities to experience Japanese traditional culture and performing arts. The program featured hands-on ikebana (flower arrangement) and tea ceremony activities, demonstrations of Sumi-e ink painting and Iaido, as well as performances of Taiko drums, Sanshin, and Koto. The venue remained lively throughout the event, which concluded with great success.
The Consular Office of Japan will continue to work with Japan-U.S. organizations and community partners to promote mutual understanding and cultural exchange between Japan and the United States through opportunities to share Japanese culture.
