On August 24, Mr. Aniya and Mr. Hughes exchanged views online with Dr. Hajo Eicken, Director of The International Arctic Research Center.

Mr. Aniya explained the purpose and outline of the online Arctic symposium scheduled to be hosted by the Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage this year. He stated that Arctic research and development that has been carried out in cooperation between Japan and Alaska is important, and that he would appreciate assistance from the International Arctic Research Center (IARC) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in organizing the symposium. He also described the conversations he has already taken part in with different people related to the symposium, including the Alaska Federation of Natives.

Dr. Eicken explained the accumulated research and ongoing cooperation between Japan and the United States, referring to the Japan Arctic Research Network Center (J-ARC Net), the National Institute for Polar Research (NIPR), the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), Hokkaido University, and others.
