On July 1, 2025, Head Consul Kiyohiko Hamada visited Palmer and paid a courtesy call to Matanuska-Susitna Borough Mayor Edna DeVries.
Mayor DeVries opened by speaking about the population growth and expanded industries in the Mat-Su Borough. Head Consul Hamada spoke about the thriving sister city relationship between Saroma, Hokkaido and Palmer, and how he appreciates the continued commitment to shared goals by both cities. Other topics of discussion focused on possible natural resource extraction in the Mat-Su Borough and education funding.
