On Wednesday August 5th, Head Consul Kiyohiko Hamada traveled to Prudhoe Bay for an in-depth site-visit hosted by Hilcorp Alaska representatives Robert Rood, Site Facility Engineering Manager, and Rob Kinnear, VP Marketing and Commercial Operations, to several facilities on Alaska’s North Slope.

The site-visit included the Prudhoe Bay Operations Center, Central Gas Facility, Seawater Treatment Plant, Base Operations Camp, and Flow Station One, providing an opportunity to see firsthand the scale and sophistication of Arctic oil production and the responsive activity as monitored from control rooms. The delegation received detailed briefings on Prudhoe Bay’s production operations, gas reinjection and enhanced oil recovery, water management, and extensive infrastructure functioning as a pillar of Alaska’s economy.

The visit also provided valuable insight into the future of Alaska’s energy sector. Discussions with Hilcorp representatives included ongoing efforts related to AKLNG, North Slope gas and oil resources, opportunities for Japanese participation, and the growing role of digitalization in energy operations.

The visit was one of many continued Japan-Alaska engagements in Arctic development and provided a look at the people and infrastructure supporting Alaska’s energy production, an important sector for the energy security and economic stability of both Japan and Alaska.

The Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage, Alaska, thanks Hilcorp Alaska for its generous hospitality and for providing an invaluable opportunity to learn more about North Slope operations and Alaska’s energy sector.
