2017 Emperor's Birthday Reception

On Wednesday, December 13, Consul Masatoshi Sato hosted a reception in honor of the 84th birthday of His Majesty the Emperor Akihito on December 23. More than 150 guests attended the reception at the Hotel Captain Cook in downtown Anchorage. Distinguished guests included Alaska leaders in various fields, local Japanese community leaders, and United States military personnel, many of whom have been stationed in Japan.

The program began with performances of the United States and Japan National Anthems by Ms. Lisa Hawkins. Consul Sato delivered a speech about the strong relationship Japan enjoys with Alaska and the United States as a whole. Alaska First Lady Donna Walker and Alaskan Command Leader Colonel Cory Mendenhall also gave remarks about the Japan-Alaska friendship. The official portion of the reception concluded with a toast offered by Japan Alaska Association President Erika Ninoyu.

Guests had the opportunity to sample Japanese sake and plum wine. Guests were welcomed to take home the masu (square box) used for sampling, as well as a bag containing materials relating to Japan and Alaska's sister cities.
