Foreign Minister’s Commendation Conferment Ceremony for Ms. Carla Swick

On Friday, January 12, 2024, an award ceremony was held in Palmer to present the Foreign Minister's Commendation to Ms. Carla Swick, a recipient of the 2023 Foreign Minister's Commendation.
Ms. Swick has been instrumental in promoting Japanese language education in the Wasilla-Palmer area for many years and has played a major role in promoting mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States through her contributions to the Palmer-Saroma Sister City Exchange Program. For these achievements, Ms. Swick received the 2023 Foreign Minister's Commendation in August 2023.
The ceremony was attended by Palmer Mayor Steve Carrington, Ms.Tanya Lang (Palmer Saroma Association Board Member), members of Ms. Swick's family, educators in the Palmer and Wasilla area, friends, students from Japanese classes, and the members of the Sister City Exchange Groupe.
In her acknowledgments, Ms. Swick expressed her gratitude to her family, friends, and others involved, and explained how she became involved in Japanese language education and sister city exchanges.
In their congratulatory speeches, Mayor Carrington and Ms. Lang noted that Ms. Swick had always been central to the activities of the Sister City Exchange Group.
In addition, Saroma Mayor Harutomo Takeda wrote a humorous congratulatory message praising Ms. Swick’s achievements in sister city exchanges. Saroma has maintained sister city relations with Palmer for 43 years.
