On March 29th, the “20th Alaska Nihongo Contest”, a Japanese language contest, was held at Diamond High School in Anchorage, with over 200 Japanese language learners from Anchorage and Palmer taking part.

At the beginning, the president of the Alaska Association of Teachers of Japanese, Mr. Haruki Kamimura, gave a welcome note, followed by the opening speech from Mr. Christopher Constant, Anchorage Assembly Chair. After that, the students gave performances such as speeches, haiku, poetry, skits, and songs, presenting the results of their daily studies.
The speeches covered various themes such as the differences they had discovered through their studies between Japanese and American culture, and the original skits were very interesting and showed the tireless efforts of the Japanese language learners.
In the afternoon, Tomodachi Daiko put on a powerful taiko drum performance.
At the closing ceremony, Head Consul Hamada praised the participants for their attitude towards learning Japanese and the results of their efforts, and also encouraged them to continue to play an active role as a bridge between Japan and Alaska, and Japan and the United States.

In addition to the dedicated efforts of the volunteers and others involved, the success of the event was also due to the contributions of the sister cities, such as Chitose, Monbetsu and Saroma, which provided special prizes.
The Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage hopes for the continuous success of Japanese language learners in Alaska.
