Japan Alaska Tourism Seminar
2025/3/5

On Tuesday March 4th, 2025, the Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage hosted a Japan Alaska Tourism Seminar. The Seminar featured remarks from Head Consul Kiyohiko Hamada, Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance, Fairbanks N.S.B. Mayor Grier Hopkins, and detailed presentations by 7 industry experts ranging broadly across the tourism sector. In attendance 21 different organizations were represented with additional viewership online from organizations in Japan and Alaska.
The Seminar focused on tourism trends and statistics over recent years and highlighted opportunities and challenges to the Alaska tourism market. Discussion also focused on some of the unique legal and economic constraints on Japan’s tourism market enabling communication and collaboration between Alaska and Japan’s tourism sectors. Statistical data also served to highlight the strong importance of Alaska’s aviation and cruise industries while examining the possible impact of a direct air traffic route between Japan and Alaska on the Asia market. It is our hope that the discussions held will facilitate increased activity for our regions.
The Consular Office would like to extend a note of appreciation to Alaska’s Travel Industry Association and the Anchorage Economic Development Corp. that assisted us in conceptualizing this event.
