Online Meeting with Honorary Consul Rebecca Carrillo

Mr. Aniya, Mr. Weinert and Ms. Rebecca Carrillo, Honorary Consul of Philippines, exchanged views at an online meeting on May 4.
Honorary Consul Ms. Carrillo, who has been in Alaska for 40 years, said Japan and the Philippines have a close relationship, especially in economic fields, and that there are 30,000 Filipino people in Alaska, which is the largest Asian American minority group in the state. She said most Filipino’s work in the fishing industry, so they typically live in communities along the Aleutian Islands, Kodiak, Cordova, Bristol Bay, and Ketchikan. Filipinos are the largest racial minority in Anchorage.
Mr. Aniya mentioned that there are about 750 Japanese people in Alaska as a whole, and they also live in areas with active fishing such as Kodiak, and Dutch Harbor, as well as Anchorage, Fairbanks, and the Kenai Peninsula.
Honorary Consul Carillo and Mr. Aniya mentioned that Japan and the Philippines may cooperate in various areas of consular services, including emergency response.
