On December 8, Mr. Aniya met with Dr. Steve Konkel. He is a professor and Principal of Konkel & Associates, which conducts work related to Arctic policy, climate change and health, and sustainable communities. He said that he first came to travel Alaska; by then the State of Alaska had captured his imagination. He was very fortunate to work as a policy analyst in the Governor’s Office. Governor Jay Hammond was Alaska’s 4th Governor and “one of its best,” according to Dr. Konkel. Gov. Hammond served two terms from1974-1982. Hammond recommended Konkel as a Ph.D. candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, leading to his degree in environmental policy & conflict resolution.
Dr. Konkel recently attended the “Online Arctic Symposium'' held on Nov. 20 and 21, 2023. “When I attended the online Arctic Symposium, I learned a lot about Japan. It was interesting to see that Alaska and Japan are so closely connected, particularly in the seafood industry and with maritime policy; emerging issues have common threads in the USA and Japan. This should foster cooperation and collaboration. All of the topics covered at the symposium were informative and excellent."
In response, Mr. Aniya said, “I would like to thank you for attending the Online Arctic Symposium, and I hope that the symposium will serve as an opportunity to promote cooperative relationships between Japan and Alaska in many fields, including the fishing industry. I hope to work with you in the future to make the next symposium a reality."
