On May 26, 2025, Head Consul Hamada and staff of the Consular Office of Japan attended the Memorial Day Ceremony held at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Keynote speaker, Verdie Bowen Sr., Director of the Alaska Office of Veterans Affairs, spoke about remembering those that fought and paid the ultimate sacrifice and continuing to preserve their lasting legacies.

Duane Mendenhall, Director of the Fort Richardson and Sitka National Cemeteries, read the Presidential Proclamation from US President Donald Trump.

A proclamation was also read from the Governor of Alaska Mike Dunleavy, followed by wreaths being laid by guests.

After the ceremony, the Consular Office along with members of the Japanese community visited the cenotaph to pay their respects for the Japanese servicemen who died on Attu Island offering flowers for the repose of the souls of the war dead.

The Consular Office would like to express its deepest appreciation to Duane Mendenhall, Director of the Fort Richardson and Sitka National Cemeteries Administration Office, and his staff for their efforts in organizing this ceremony, and to the Japanese community and bereaved family groups who continue to maintain the cenotaph and conduct services of remembrance.
