On July 10, Head Consul Hamada paid a courtesy call to Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu, founding director of the International Arctic Research Center of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Dr. Hajo Eicken, Director of the IARC.
Dr. Akasofu spoke about the history of the IARC, as well as his work and time spent in Fairbanks. Head Consul Hamada was honored and enamored in hearing that Dr. Akasofu still has many goals for the IARC. In December of 2006, the University of Alaska Board of Regents unanimously approved a proposal to name the building that houses the IARC as the Syun-Ichi Akasofu Building.
Dr. Eicken spoke about the issues and challenges of the negative impacts of climate change in the Arctic, but also the work scientists at the IARC have done to understand and mitigate the effects of climate change. After the tour of the IARC, Head Consul Hamada was grateful to meet with the Japanese scientists at the IARC and see their work.
The Consular Office of Japan looks forward to future cooperation with the International Arctic Research Center.
