Mr. Mead Treadwell to receive 2020 Spring Decoration from the Government of Japan

On April 29, 2020 Japan Standard Time, the Government of Japan announced that Mr. Mead Treadwell, Former Chairman of Japan-America Society of Alaska (Founder) has been awarded The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, in recognition of his contributions to Japan.

(1) Contribution to strengthening relations between Japan and the United States in the economic field
He is the first president of the Japan-America Society of Alaska, and he is a leader in Alaska, and also a powerful politician who served as Lt. Governor of Alaska. Influenced by grandfather Howard Porter, who had experience working at the Legal Affairs Bureau of the General Commander of the Allied Forces who implemented the occupation policy in Japan after World War II. He had a strong interest in Japan since he was an adolescent, and he worked as a businessman to visit Japan more than 30 times, and worked hard to strengthen the economic relationship between Japan and the United States.
The specific contributions are as follows.
・Approval for Alaska crude oil export to Japan
As Yukon Pacific Corporation's Vice President and Treasurer, Mr. Treadwell worked extensively in discussions with officials in Japan and the public and private sectors of the country to help establish an Alaska crude oil export license to Japan.
・Promoting investment in Alaska from Japan
In 2000, he made an effort to establish the Japan-Alaska Society of America and became its first chairman. In particular, he aimed to promote exchanges between Japanese and Alaskan business circle officials in order to promote investment in Alaska from Japan.
As Lieutenant Governor of Alaska, he also worked to promote investment from Japan to Alaska. In particular, he worked hard to realize investment by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Alaska.
(2) Contribution as President of the Presidential Advisory U.S. Artic Research Commission
・Under his leadership, the USARC supported and recognized Japan’s $90 million contribution to the International Arctic Research Center established in 1999 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks by the United States and Japan, and coordinated with the Federal Government, Alaska State Government, and University of Alaska at Fairbanks to make it happen.
・In 2009, he persuaded officials in the federal government to support the position of the Japanese government in becoming an observer of the Arctic Council.
・He proposed to Japan the establishment of the Parliamentary League on the Arctic, and in October 2013, "The Parliamentary League on the Arctic Frontier" was established. He encouraged experts in Japan and the United States to deepen exchanges and discussions on the theme of "Arctic" while sharing the knowledge of industry, government, and academia.
(3) Contribution as President of PT Capital LLC and Treadwell Development Founder / President
・In the Arctic, he has always sought cooperation with Japanese stakeholders in advancing business in the fields of energy, transportation and communication services. He provided advisory services related to oil development in Greenland, which was involved in 2013-2018 by independent administrative agency, Petroleum Natural Gas / Metallic Mineral Resources Organization of Japan.
