On June 23, Mr. Aniya and Mr. Hughes exchanged views online with Mr. Ryan Binkley, CEO of Anchorage Daily News.

 

Mr. Aniya congratulated Mr. Binkley on theAnchorage Daily News receiving the Pulitzer Prize in your Public Service in 2020. He also expressed that the newspaper is a valuable source of information for the Consular Office staff, and also a great way to get information related to the office/Japan out to the people of Alaska. On March 8th, the newspaper published an article about the Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage that included information about its establishment in 1970, the Osaka Expo held that same year, the upcoming "EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan", Mr. Naoki Uemura (a well-known Japanese adventurer), and sister city relations between Japan and Alaska.

Mr. Binkley talked about how his family dates all the way back to the Klondike Gold Rush, and how his family currently conducts sightseeing tours by boat and helicopter. Mr. Binkley also explained that whenthe Anchorage Daily News went into bankruptcy in 2017, he felt the need for a local newspaper and therefore he and his other siblings bought it out of bankruptcy. He felt honored that the Anchorage Daily News won a Pulitzer Prize in 2020, and his core belief is that the newspaper should have a deep understanding of the facts and convey accurate information to Alaskan citizens.
