Job Opening : Political Affairs and JET Program Coordinator

The Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage is seeking a locally employed staff member to join our Office, as the Political Affairs and JET Program Coordinator.
Job Description:
  • Be aware of, and regularly monitor, political developments in Alaska and write semi-regular reports as requested.
  • Coordinate with federal, state, local and U.S. military leaders, as necessary.
  • Attend meetings with Consular staff, as requested.
  • Coordinate all details for execution of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Program objectives in Alaska, including recruitment, screening of candidates, and supporting successful candidates to meet requirements. (Some travel may be required.)
  • Be responsible for Office facility maintenance, including the regular maintenance of the Office vehicle.
  • Assist with cultural affairs duties, including the organization of Consular Office events.  
  • Respond to telephone and email inquiries from the public.
  • Assist with other administrative matters.
  • Assist with Consul’s personal affairs.
  • Assist other local staff as needed.
  • Support the protection of Japanese nationals in Alaska.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Proficiency in Japanese, N2 or above is preferred.
  • Be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Be able to give public presentations in English.
  • Recruitment experience preferred.
  • Close attention to detail is required.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Have an interest in strengthening relations between Japan and Alaska.
  • Be able to work with other staff members in a collaborative and cooperative environment.
  • Complete all tasks on time.
Working Hours:
  • Monday – Friday, 8:45-Noon, 1:00pm – 4:45pm.
  • Primary duty station will be at the Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage, though some work from home may be allowed due to COVID-19 pandemic precautions.
Employment Contract & Benefits:
  • Employment contract for two years, following one-to-three-month probationary period. Contract is renewable by consent of Office leadership and local staff member.
  • Competitive monthly salary as determined by Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo, Japan.
  • Monthly salary will be based on experience.
  • Overtime allowance is possible, and sometimes required.
  • 80% of medical insurance payment to locally employed staff members provided by Consular Office, as well portion of social security tax obligation.
  • Paid annual leave stipulated by our Office, plus most major U.S. and Japanese holidays.
  • Relocation costs will not be covered by the Consular Office of Japan in Anchorage.
